Ongoing actions at Congress members’ offices in the San Francisco Bay Area to focus on voting NO on the supplemental appropriation.

On Valentine’s Day 2007, 18 activists representing Code Pink, Global Exchange, League of Young Voters, Pelosi Watch, Center for Spiritual Living, World Stewardship Institute and Inochi, delivered “Broken hearts valentines” with messages about the war and pairs of shoes representing murdered Iraqi children, and met with Dan Bernal, Congresswoman Pelosi’s District Director, and Melani Nutter, Deputy District Director, to ask the following:

1) that Pelosi publicly pledge to vote NO on the supplemental appropriation for the war coming before Congress this spring;

2) that Pelosi support HR 508;

and

3) that Pelosi meet with us directly when she returns to the Bay Area this month.

After assurances that the debate in the House of Reps on the nonbinding resolution against the “surge” is the first such debate to get all members of Congress on record about the war, with significant Republican defections; and many assurances that Congresswoman Pelosi knows well the suffering the war has caused, and has always opposed it, Mr. Bernal gave the following responses:

1) NO, Pelosi will give no such pledge or promise. Voting NO on the appropriation is only one tactic out of several to oppose the war, and Pelosi is pursuing others.

2) NO, Pelosi is not interested in HR 508 but instead will support yet-to-be-introduced legislation by Rep. John Murtha.

3) NO, Pelosi’s calendar is booked solid for months.

The issue of impeachment was also raised (passionately) and was dismissed as something Pelosi would not work on.

After an intense meeting in the hall for about 50 minutes, the group adjourned to discuss what our next steps are. They include:

Get the word out to as many groups and individuals about Pelosi’s positions as we can; post to lists and websites;
